"The Guilt Is Real"– Redefining Me: My Postpartum Journey to Rediscovering Self-Care in Parenthood

Becoming a parent is a transformative experience, one that brings joy and challenges in equal measure. For me, it was a journey that not only involved caring for my children but also confronting and overcoming personal struggles, particularly with my mental health.

After the birth of my second child, who was colicky and often cranky, finding time for myself seemed like an impossible task. Every moment was consumed by the needs of my baby, leaving me feeling overwhelmed and isolated. This was when I faced the darkest moments of depression. It was a time when self-care was not just a luxury but a necessity for survival.

I remember the feelings of guilt that washed over me whenever I thought about taking time for myself. It felt like I was neglecting my children, even though, deep down, I knew I was barely holding on. But through this struggle, I learned a crucial lesson: self-care isn't selfish, it's essential.

On days when everything felt too much, and my baby was too fussy to be left alone, I turned to what I now call 'baby-wearing walks.' Strapping my little one in a carrier, I'd step outside for a walk. Those walks were my lifeline. They were not just about physical exercise but also about mental rejuvenation. There's something incredibly therapeutic about breathing in fresh air and momentarily stepping away from the confines of your home. It was during these walks that I found clarity and strength.

These moments allowed me to reset my mind. They helped me maintain my sanity and manage my depression. Gradually, I began to realize that by taking care of my needs, I was better equipped to take care of my family. I was a better mother because I took that time to recharge.

Through my experience, I learned that self-care is not about grand gestures; it's about the small, everyday activities that help us maintain our mental and emotional equilibrium. Whether it’s a short walk, a few minutes of meditation, or just sitting quietly with a cup of tea, these acts of self-kindness are vital.

My journey taught me that the challenges of parenting, especially with a colicky baby, are immense. But it also taught me about resilience, the importance of self-care, and the strength that comes from acknowledging and addressing one's mental health needs.

So, to every parent out there feeling overwhelmed, remember this: taking care of yourself is not a detour from your duties as a parent. It is the path that allows you to be the best version of yourself, for you and for your family. Your mental health matters, and small steps towards self-care can make a significant difference in your life and the lives of those you love.
